When to go to Sharm el-Sheikh?

The Red Sea can be dived all year round. What changes is the water temperature, the heat on land and the crowds. Here are the twelve months, without embellishment.

Month by month

  • January22° on land · 22° in the water · Calm
Cool water for diving; a 5 mm wetsuit is advisable. Clear skies, and the holiday crowds have gone.
  • February23° on land · 21° in the water · Moderate
The coolest month underwater. In exchange, visibility is often at its best.
  • March26° on land · 22° in the water · High
Spring settles in. An excellent balance of bearable heat on land and a pleasant sea.
  • April31° on land · 24° in the water · High
Arguably the best month: the water is warming and the desert is still bearable in the middle of the day.
  • May35° on land · 26° in the water · Moderate
The water is warming up. Desert trips and Cairo already call for a very early start.
  • June37° on land · 27° in the water · Low
Very hot on land. Take to the sea in the morning and the desert at sunset.
  • July38° on land · 28° in the water · Moderate
School holidays. Water at 28 °C, no wetsuit needed. The long excursions are demanding.
  • August38° on land · 29° in the water · High
The warmest water of the year. Cairo and Luxor are for hardy travellers only.
  • September35° on land · 28° in the water · Moderate
The heat eases and the water stays at 28 °C. One of the best windows for diving.
  • October32° on land · 27° in the water · High
The ideal month: warm sea, bearable air, and more reef sharks at Tiran.
  • November28° on land · 25° in the water · High
Superb light, mild temperatures on land. Perfect for combining sea and desert.
  • December24° on land · 23° in the water · High
Holiday crowds. Water at 23 °C — a wetsuit is advisable beyond a single dive.

What to remember

The hottest month is July, with 38° on land and 28° in the water. The coolest is January, 22° on land and 22° in the water — a 5 mm wetsuit becomes comfortable for diving.

No month is to be avoided: sea trips run all year, and desert outings are in fact pleasanter outside the peaks of heat. The averages above are orders of magnitude, not guarantees.
